Refractive eye surgeries are designed to correct common vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. These problems affect millions of Americans and are caused by the cornea’s inability to focus light. There are two main types of refractive eye surgery: LASIK and Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK).
In LASIK surgery, a surgeon uses either a cutting blade called a microkeratome or a high-intensity light laser to cut a flap in the cornea, which is the clear “outer window” of the eye. The underlying surface of the cornea is then reshaped using the laser or blade and the flap is put back in place.
In a PRK procedure, the cornea is reshaped using a precise, computer-guided ultraviolet light beam which cuts away tiny amounts of tissue from the outer surface of the cornea. The patient’s eye is measured and mapped before the procedure and the laser’s computer calculates the exact amounts and locations of corneal tissue to be removed.
