LASIK and Refractive Eye Surgery Injuries and Complications

On April 25, 2008 there was a meeting of the FDA Ophthalmic Devices Advisory Panel invoving representatives of the panel, the Joint LASIK Study Task Force, and members of the public. Members of the public spoke out about their negative experiences with LASIK and PRK and the depression and anxiety they have suffered since their operations. Statistics about the success of the procedure and the incidence of complications are alarming considering that one million people undergo the elective procedure each year.

• Flap complications from LASIK surgery are estimated to be .244%. With one million people each year undergoing refractive eye surgery, this percentage could represent thousands of patients.
• Epithelial ingrowth incidence has been estimated at 0.1%
• Diffuse lamellar keratitis incidence has been estimated at 2.3%.
• Infection incidence is estimated at 0.4%.
• For around 5% of patients, vision was slightly worse than before the eye surgery
• Around 5% of patients continued to always need glasses after PRK for distance
• Up to 15% need glasses occasionally
• 5 to 10 % of patients need to have their vision fine-tuned , or enhanced following the initial surgery due to under or over correction
• Up to 5% report experiencing haze, halos and glare
• Ohio State University found that up to one third of the 605 LASIK patients questioned reported problems seeing at night
• The incidence of persistent dry eye has been estimated to be as high as 28% in Asian eyes and 5% in Caucasian eyes
